A Brief History
The establishment of the Assunpink Wildlife Management Area began in the 1960s as a cooperative effort between the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife, the U.S. Soil Conservation Service, and the Assunpink Watershed local sponsoring groups. Land acquisition started in 1963. The primary purpose was flood control, fish and wildlife habitat enhancement, and public recreation. The largest of the three lakes, Lake Assunpink (originally called Assunpink Creek Site 5 Dam), was completed in 1975.
Programs / Education
While not a primary focus, the NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife offers various educational programs statewide, and Assunpink WMA can serve as a living classroom for understanding wildlife management and ecology. Specific events like youth hunts or fishing education programs may occasionally be held. The area also hosts organized field trials and dog training activities. A local model airplane club utilizes a field within the WMA.
Trail & Path Info
Assunpink WMA features an extensive network of dirt roads and trails that are suitable for hiking, birdwatching, and horseback riding. These trails traverse varied terrain, including fields, forests, and lake peripheries. While many paths are unmarked, the main roads are generally easy to follow. An established horseback field trial course and bridle path system exists. Visitors should obtain a WMA map for navigation.
Things to See & Do
Assunpink WMA offers a wide range of outdoor activities throughout the year:
- Fishing: Enjoy fishing in any of the three lakes for largemouth bass, channel catfish, crappie, bluegill, pumpkinseed sunfish, and chain pickerel. Stone Tavern Lake is also stocked with trout.
- Boating: Rowboats, canoes, kayaks, and boats with electric motors are permitted on all three lakes. Launch ramps are available.
- Hunting: The WMA is managed for upland game, waterfowl, and deer hunting. Specific permits and adherence to seasons are required.
- Birdwatching: With its diverse habitats, Assunpink is a premier birding location, attracting a wide variety of resident and migratory species, including waterfowl, raptors, and songbirds.
- Horseback Riding: An extensive bridle path system and a field trial course are available for equestrian use.
- Dog Training: Designated areas are available for training hunting dogs.
- Wildlife Photography: The scenic landscapes and abundant wildlife offer excellent photographic opportunities.
- Model Airplane Flying: A specific field is designated for model airplane enthusiasts.
Special / Seasonal Events
- Hunting Seasons: Various hunting seasons occur throughout the fall, winter, and spring for deer, turkey, waterfowl, and small game. These are major "events" that dictate access and safety precautions for other users.
- Fishing Tournaments: Local clubs may occasionally host fishing tournaments on the lakes.
- Field Trials: Organized horseback and dog field trials are held at designated times.
- Seasonal Bird Migrations: Spring and fall migrations bring large numbers of birds through the area, attracting birdwatchers.
Tips and Tricks
- Consult WMA Maps: Familiarize yourself with the area map for parking, boat launches, and trails.
- Wear Blaze Orange: During hunting seasons, it is crucial for non-hunters to wear fluorescent orange for visibility and safety.
- Check Regulations: Review NJ Fish and Wildlife regulations for fishing (licenses, creel limits), hunting (permits, seasons, bag limits), and general WMA rules before visiting.
- Prepare for Ticks/Insects: Especially in warmer months, use insect repellent and check for ticks after your visit.
- Leave No Trace: Pack out everything you pack in to help keep the WMA clean.
Picnics / Lunches / Eating
While there are no dedicated picnic facilities like tables or grills, visitors are generally welcome to picnic.
- Find a suitable spot along a trail or near a lake.
- All food and trash must be packed out (Leave No Trace).
